Greetings all! Did ya miss me?
Well, the trip to Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove was just awesome. Other than visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium (or the Cetacean Institute, for some of you (bonus points if you get that)), we had no ambitions whatsoever. Well, we were going to visit Hearst Castle, but the wildfires caused the closure of the route down there, and since the alternate route added a ridiculous amount of time to the trip, we decided not to go. Oh well, next time.
So we bopped around Carmel quite a bit. I know, that sounds a little pretentious doesn’t it? But that’s what we did. That and a lot of walking along the beach and investigating tide pools. We stayed away from a lot of the tourist-y type things because we’re snobs that way. We tended toward the smaller restaurants in Pacific Grove (where our hotel really was) and tried to really get a feel for life down there. In short: very nice, very expensive, and way too laid back for our taste. By the third day, we were getting a little stir crazy.
But about the hotel. It was a little place called the Butterfly Grove Inn. During the winter, it is part of a butterfly sanctuary. The place itself is this vintage 1950’s motor inn. Check it out:
And when was the last time you saw a hotel key that looked like this?
It was pretty awesome. But no wi-fi. Which means Spouse had to Shut.It.Down. Totally unintentional, I assure you.
As for souvenirs, it was otters for everyone! A piece of art almost made its way home from Carmel, but cooler heads prevailed. Just barely. Actually, the one we almost got wasn’t on that page. Pity. It’s even cooler than the ones there. I did manage to bring home something in a little blue box though. I mean it IS my fifteenth anniversary after all. Scary that Spouse had to talk ME into it.
So that’s the short version of the vacation. I have lots of notes written on lots of pieces of paper that will be turned into blog posts over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
