Haiku Friday 10/31/08

Haiku Friday
Halloween today.
Do not have our costumes yet.
Procrastinate much?

But we like zombies
And all that requires is some
Makeup and old clothes.

A trip to Target
Will suffice for us this year.
Halloween awaits!

And some bonus Haiku:

Bloggers, take your mark!
NaBlo begins tomorrow.
Ready, get set, BLOG!

Nothing says lovin’ like something from the oven…

As promised, I am posting the cookie recipe that Angela chose for all to see. What did she choose? Why my speci-ality (for you Wallace and Grommit lovers out there): Oatmeal Chocolate Chip.

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 (12 oz) pkg chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a large bowl, beat butter until fluffy.

Add sugars; beat until fluffy.

Helpful hint: scrape the sides before adding each new set of ingredients.

Add eggs and vanilla, beat well.

Add flour, baking soda and salt; mix well.

Stir in oatmeal and chocolate chips until thoroughly combined.

Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto a cookie sheet.

Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until cookies are just set. Do not over bake. Helpful hint: reset your oven in between sheets. Look how far off the temp is in on my oven after one batch.

Place on rack to cool.

Hey wait a minute! Who snuck a cookie?

A special thanks goes out to my able assistant, Thing 2. 🙂

Wordless Wednesday: For the undecideds out there…

Much Ado About Nothing?

So I went to my book club tonight (Much Ado About Nothing, if you must know), and after we finished talking about the play, the topic shifted to politics. I should have left right then, seeing as I am the only Democrat for about five square miles, but I stayed.

It isn’t so much that they are “conservative” that bugs me. It’s that some of them bought into the “Real Americans” crap that is being spewed right now.

Really? “Real Americans”? Do people not realize what a slippery slope that is? And don’t tell me that kind of talk is just campaign rhetoric. People are scared right now and looking for “someone” to blame, so let’s blame the people who aren’t “Real Americans”. There were people in the room I was in that agreed that some people aren’t “Real Americans”. Who the hell decides who is a “Real American”? And what happens to you if you aren’t?

I only wish it were “Much Ado About Nothing”, but that kind of talk scares me to my core. Because by these people’s definition, I am not one of them. Don’t tell me that “it can’t happen here”, because it already has. Ask any Japanese person here during WWII.

I didn’t want to get political. This blog is supposed to be about dog treats and kinoki pads, not this. But when I see the fear and anger this campaign season has stoked, it makes me so sad and afraid for what we are turning into. Because no matter who wins, I’m afraid that rhetoric isn’t going away any time soon.

No great conclusion to tie things up here. It’s late, I’m tired, and I had three sangrias. Possibly four. I just needed to get this off of my chest. Thanks for listening.

And the winner is…..

Drum roll please….

It’s Angela at Mommybytes! Which is really appropriate since she’s been there since almost the beginning! Angela, I’ll shoot you an email so you can send me your info and cookie choice. As a consolation, I’ll post the recipe for whatever cookie she chooses. 🙂

Now it’s time to get ready for NaBlo. I’m going to clean up the place a little and do some housekeeping like updating my blogroll! It’s going to be a crazy month!

It’s my blogversary and you get the presents!

So, it was exactly one year ago today that I got a wild hair and decided to start blogging. Here is that first post, since I know for a fact none of you have read it:

Well, here I am. Me and about a billion other people. Adding my thoughts and ideas to an already overcrowded place and adding to the deafening background noise that is modern life. So why should you make this a place to waste some of your precious time? What’s so freakin‘ special about me that you would come here and see what I have to say?

Nothing. And everything. I’m pretty average, I would have to say. I’m married, with kids, cats, the SUV, mortgage, soccer, and all that stuff. I stay at home and tend to the chaos that is our life. But I’m constantly brooding about something. Whether it is the odd fact that I heard David Bowie’s “White Wedding” as MUZAK at the grocery store today (WTF?), or what about the underpaid woman in Pakistan who made the sippy cup that my children drank out of, or that soccer fans in the US really need to support Fulham in the EPL because there are a lot of American players on the team and it will boost the USA’s soccer cred if they do well, I have something to say about everything.

And I love reading blogs. Not all blogs mind you, but some. It’s a voyeuristic thing I guess. Reading these things about other peoples lives is strangely comforting. For me it is a pleasant reminder that these people you see out there, the author and the ubergeek for example, are just people. Regular people, with regular problems, and a regular life. Just. Like. Me. And you.

So welcome. I hope that we can get to know each other. I hope that I can bring something of value into your life. I hope that this doesn’t become just another blog out there that never gets read.

Until later,

And that’s how it all started. It’s been fun so far, and I’m now working on a way to take my writing to the next level, whatever that may be. I’ll be doing NaBloPoMo again and may actually try NaNoWriMo this year. Maybe. 🙂

Anyway, to thank you guys for all the encouragement, support, laughs, and what not over the past year, I thought I would have a small giveaway. At first I thought I ought to give away one of the silly dog products I always take pictures of, but then thought a little better of it. Instead, since the vast majority of you seem to be serious readers, I will offer up a way to feed your addiction. How does a Barnes and Noble gift card strike you? And a really nice bookmark with a George Eliot quote that says “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” Because that is what this whole blog is about: figuring out what the next step in my life is going to be. Oh, and some cookies. I make amazing cookies, if I do say so myself. I’ll let you choose from three types: oatmeal chocolate chip, white chocolate pistachio, and Mexican wedding.

How does one qualify for this giveaway? Simply leave me a comment by 8 am Saturday morning and I’ll have a random drawing. If you tell me which of my “best” posts you like the best (check the sidebar) I’ll enter you twice. Deal?

This has been really fun so far. Thank you all so much. 🙂

Thank goodness for a meme…

Else I’d still have nothing to say. Yes, Pamela, I stole your idea here. That’s how desperate I am right now. At least I have something for my Blogversary tomorrow. Sort of. Anyway, I got tagged for the one word meme by Catherine at Pink Asparagus. Here it is:
